VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
Hi.
I just installed VirtualBox 3.0.4 r50677 on WinXP and try to install ArchLinux as a guest from Netinstall ISO.
VirtualBox crashes when ArchLinux is booting on udev starting stage. Just checked with Linux Mint 7.0 - boot successfully.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Share the settings with us.
Also 32 or 64 bit?

32-bit both. Also: 256 of RAM, NAT networking, 8G virtual disk (autoextending) - for Guest.
Host - 1CPU Athlon 1200, 1G RAM. Any other information needed?

Re: VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
udev crashes are usually caused by network adapter, USB, or a few other things that are detected and loaded during the initial boot.
Disable the USB (You can't use it in the OSE version anyway) if you have not already and select a different Network adapter in the guest settings.
Try the PCnet fastII instead of PCnet fastIII.
Also sometimes the audio card can cause this problem. You can turn this off as well and then turn it back on and install those drivers after the OS gets installed.
You should be able to up the memory to at least 384meg and this might help as well. After the install you should be able to turn this back down to 256meg

Re: VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
I have disabled USB, Network, audio. Also I've increased guest's RAM to 384M, then to 512M. Nothing helps.
Also I tried VirtualBox 3.0.2 and got the same crash.

Re: VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
Have you tried the normal install of Arch?
What about a different distro like Ubuntu? See if it will install.
Also you can download a live CD version, burn to CD and see if it will run, eliminating any problems that might be coming from your PC.

Re: VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
I'm also using the lastest virtualbox 3.0.4 on Windows XP host with ArchLinux guest. Virtualbox crashes appear to be kernel related...at least on my setup. I installed from one on the ArchLinux live CD images, kernel 2.6.28 got installed and it worked fine. When I did a full system upgrade, kernel 2.6.30.4 got installed and vbox crashed every single time...even when I'm using the fallback image. I reinstalled kernel 2.6.28 from the livecd and vbox is fine but I ArchLinux failed to boot up with the normal kernel image. I have to use the fallback image in order to boot up. Anyway as far as vbox crashes, I think it's related to the latest linux kernel 2.6.30.

Re: VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
I'm starting to think that it is a specific problem with the new kernel as well.

Re: VirtualBox crashes on udev stage
Can you escalate this to bug status so the developer can hopefully fix it in next vbox release?
