Hello guys,

I had an idea to make a data server from my Ubuntu 9.04.

The first step for this to happen:

I need to make my ubuntu guest to be visible on my network (wich have 2 windows on it).

So I was thinking to make a bridge network right?
I went to Virtualbox select SETTINGS>NETWORK then:
Board type: PCNET-PCI II
Conected to: Bridge Mode
Name: My host Ethernet name

But my ubuntu lost the conection.
What am I doing wrong?

You are not alone. I have the same trouble.
It would be nice if you type more details about your HostOS version and servicePaks, vBox version and mey be something more?!

Try to change your vbox network adapter to Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop. It's working for me!!

I switch the net adapter... and still no deal.
I have a Vista host SP1
Ubuntu 9.04 guest
and virtualbox 3.0.4

Maybe I should choose another way like NAT with port fowarding, do you think it should work?

Can you give us the details of the connexion that Ubuntu gives you in the Network properties ? (IP, submask, gateway). How is your network ? Router, etc... ? Check if DHCP is activated for the router to give you an IP for your VBox guest.

I have a cable-wireless router.
In it, I have two wired desktops and a wireless notebook.
Beetween this three I ocasionaly shared docs

I have Dynamic IP Adress.
But to avoid loss of configs that were made in the router, these three computer are configured with STATIC IP.
I configure a static IP for the Ubuntu VM, but it's not working. And I also tried the dynamic way, but no deal.

I also block the 445 tcp in the router's firewall because I'm security freak.

Let's talk about my host configs:
I use the heavy loaded Vista, so to optimize it I disable some Vista Services in msconfig. Maybe one service that is critical to bridge virtual box ? (Remind that NATTING works fine)

My firewall is also tight. The only windows' stuff that I allow to pass through are the SHARING FILES AND PRINTER, NETWORK DISCOVERY and MSN. The rest is all block because I don't use any remote service (wich is about to change if my data server go forward)

Well well.... In any case, do you have a rule in your firewall for letting VBox see the outside ? Since you said the NAT works, i guess so. I wonder what Ubuntu tells you what ip it got when you let it get something by DHCP (all automatic).

When I select a static ip there's any alteration that I have to make in the VM?
The static IP DOESN'T work in NAT neither bridge.

I made new test:
1. NAT and dynamic IP
2. NAT and static IP
3. Bridge and dynamic IP
4. Bridge and static IP

only the test 1 works... don't know what else to do...

Disabling Vista services should not cause a problem. As long as you can browse the internet from your host PC it should be fine for the bridged network, since that stuff is all drivers.

Check the network connection properties for your internet connection and make sure VirtualBox has an entry in there for it's bridged networking, and that it is checked. It's required for bridged networking. If not you should reinstall VirtualBox to fix it.

I'm realy trying to work this stuff out.

When I bridged my network in Ubuntu and when I'm in NAT mode I checked on my host and he shows two networks:

1. Local Network (aka my phisical network at home) - Private NT
2. Virtual Box Host-Only network - Public NT

Maybe I'm missing some configs IN Ubuntu or in the net conections on my host. Some guess?

After a bunch of work.
I finally figure it out....

You had to SET A STATIC DHCP net on Ubuntu, set the BOARD to PRO/100 intel and bridge on Virtual Box.
That combo was hard to match!

Now... how I'm be able to make a server? Instaling SAMBA maybe?
