Failed upgrade from VB2.2.2 to 3.0.4 - XP VM freezes after u

I am trying to upgrade from VB 2.2.2 r46594 to 3.0.4 r50677, but after upgrading my WinXP VM (32 bit) hangs during bootup.
- It loads to the "starting windows xp screen" and the progress bar does not move
- In safe mode it hangs loading some drivers

After downgrading back to VB 2.2.2 r46594, the VM works fine.

1. Has anyone faced this problem upgrading before?
2. Do I have to upgrade incrementally? I.e. from 2.2.2 to 2.3.X then to 3.0.4?

Thanks in advance!

P.s. let me know if posting more details would help

This is usually fixed by uninstalling the version that you have now and then installing the newer version.
Also you can try to install by right clicking the install program and then left click on run as admin.
Depending on the version Windows you have this can help.

Could be a problem with the older guest additions with the newer VirtualBox too... try booting into safe mode in the VM. If it works, install the new guest additions there and see if it fixes the problem. If not try uninstalling them entirely. If the problem persists you may just have to reinstall Windows, fortunately not such a big deal in a VM. :)

Hi,

1. I still cannot install the latest version 3.0.4
- I've incrementally installed up to 3.0.0
- But now host networking is not working (a critical function for me)

2. Guest Additions was not installed when I first upgraded from 2.2.2 to 3.0.4

Could it be something else I missed out?

Thanks

Two things that you can do to see if you can get this installed:

1. Right click on the install program and then left click on run as admin.
or
2a If that fails you need to reinstall version 2.2.2 and select repair. (DO NOT reboot)
2b Run the version 2.2.2 install again and tell it to uninstall (DO NOT reboot)
2c Run the new Version 3.0.4 install and see if it works (This time reboot)

Probably should skip # 1 at this point and just go to # 2
