Hi

I installed Solaris as guest on Windows Xp as Host. Installation was clean with no errors.
Solaris detected ethernet card as e1000g but now the internet is not working, although it's able to ping my windows host.
But not the router. Internet is working fine on Windows Xp.

I have a wireless router

N/w Details
router ip 192.168.1.1
solaris ip 192.168.1.10
windows ip 192.168.1.2

Can the internet be run on solaris when i have a wireless router and if yes then what should be nameserver.
PLease Help!
Thanks in advance

Hi,

Probably I have the same problem. Try this: check if the bridge minidriver is enabled in the network card (right click the connection, select properties, there's a list with checkbox. vbox bridge driver should be there and selected)
You should setup default gateway and name server should be same like on WinXP. You can type ipconfig /all on winXP box to check.

As bosyak had suggested,

I have checked the properties of the connection and bridge minidriver is enabled.
I am now able to ping the router but still its unable to connect the internet.
I checked the nameserver in Windows and its same as the deafult gateway that is 192.168.1.1

Am am able to ping all the machines in my netwrok(4 of them).
But why am not able to connect to the internet?

ping google.com earlier used to give error as unknown host but now it just keeps waiting displaying noting untill i stop it (ctrl+c).

Please Help

Did you try opening a website instead of pinging it? Also tried, just for simplicity, change from Bridged to NAT and put the network on DHCP (if you don't have it like that already). Now try to open a website.

You can try the NAT thing and it may be sufficient for you but if you still want bridged:

Ensure the VM properties show the type of network as "Bridged Adapter" AND that your internet connection is selected as the bridged network. If either setting is different it's probably what is preventing you from connecting.

Try the tracert command instead of ping (tracert google.com) this will try to ping each host along the way to google.com... when it starts printing stars that means it is unable to contact the next host and so either that host or the link in between that one and the previous could be where the trouble lies.

Hi all

Thanks for all your support, the problem has gone a little complex now.
I had tried opening websites in browsers but no luck and even tried using their IP's but the result was the same.

Earlier I was not able to ping my router but now I am and also I can ping any website using its IP but not the name.
This seems to me a DNS issue.
Also the windows host is using DHCP to get an IP and for my Solaris Host I have been assigning a static IP.

I will try the NAT thing as you have suggested and will revert back soon.

Thanks

Hi all

I tried changing to NAT but it didnot work either. Using NAT my solaris machine again stopped pinging the router . :(

Which version are you using? NAT and ping was only added a few versions back, in 2.2 or 2.1. The best solution to check is still opening a website.

Hi all

The issue was solved.
I was using virtualbox 2.2 earlier and yesterday i upgraded it to 3.0.4 and there it was I was able to connect to internet.
I didnt make any other change and do not think this was a version issue.
Anyways the issue is resolved and thanks to all.
