More CPU Performance for the Guest OS

hi

I'm using a debian 4.0 server with virtualbox (guest os windows server 2008)

my harddisk load (raid0) is very high (large files) and the harddisk is crypted with truecrypt AES, which produce an high cpu load..

if I unrar something, windows shows me 100% cpu load - but there is a load average from 0.8 - so how can I tune up the cpu performance for the virtualbox?

is "nice" a solution?

I noticed something similar yesterday, was defragging a guest and the disk activity was blocking responsiveness of the host (even though the host cpu wasn't being fully utilized).

IO interrupt blocking maybe something else to consider too (for disk intensive ops).

On my fully preemptive kernel the irq's are listed as processes, so all i had to do was make the IRQ of the disk a bit nicer (i.e from -5 to 0) so it better shared interrupt time to others - like X. That resulted in a instant increase in host gui responsiveness.

There is something different about 3.0.4 performance, I'm also getting lower host CPU utilization.. say when the guest is at 100%.. the host is pegging at 50%. Is there a new host CPU utilization limit setting I'm missing?

Sounds to me as if you are running a uniprocessor VM on a dual core host.

2 cpu's are displayed under the processor list in windows system manager.

I'm currently using "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC", driver details reveals hal.dll
Not that that should make any difference as to how much host cpu vbox uses.
