I cannot install Windows98se on VirtualBox 3.0.2/3.0.4 on Solaris x86 10/08 Host. By disabling all features (VT...) I can start the installation, but after the latest reboot, Win98se will not start (Aborted).
It looks like an IDE controler problem (emulated VBox hardware), because if I remove the recognized IDE controler in the VM via "Safe Mode", the VM will start up at the next boot via "Normal" Mode, but recognizes the emulated controler and installs an driver. After this the VM will no longer boot up.
I also tried to use the "Standard IDE Controler" driver in Windows, but with the same result.

What if you abort the driver install and after that disable it?

Thank you for the hint, in order to this I was able to setup my Win98.
It was not so simple, because Windows recognises the Controler as "Standard IDE ..." and wants to install his standard driver. After that I was not able to disable the driver, also if I abort this driver installation, because then is no entry in the device manager.
So I had to move the "MSHDC.inf" to somewhere out and then I could follow your procedure. But, by this way, no CD-Rom access is available. As workaround here I added the CD-Rom driver from the start disc to the config.sys/autoexec.bat.
It's not perfect, I know, but it works
