[Solved] Guest’s IP address?

Post by gfheiche »

I play BridgeBaron18 with my wife over the home network. However, when I upgraded my computer to Windows7, I learned that it is not compatible with BB18. So, I installed Virtual Box2.2.2, Vista as a guest and BB18 on the guest. BB18 now works offline.

To play online, I have to tell my wife’s computer the IP address where I play BB18.
BB18 shows my IP as 10.0.2.15 and warns me that it is fake; I should use the real IP.
An IP locator shows: 98.218.20.24.
Clicking the Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections, then right clicking on the specific connection and left clicking Status/Details shows for the guest (Vista): 192.168.56.1 and for the host (Windows7):192.168.1.103.

None of these IP addresses works: 10.0.2.15, 98.218.20.24, 192.168.56.1 and 192.168.1.103

Are there some settings to be changed?

Hi. Read up on Bridged Networks. If you VM to participate on your LAN as a normal system then you should switch your VMs NIC to this mode.

Can you please suggest where to read up on Bridged Networks. I did not find anything in the VirtualBox Documentation on switching the VM’s NIC.
The VM Devices/Network Adapters shows only one adapter and it can only be enabled or disabled, no switching.

I should add, my wife’s computer (Windows XP) and mine (Windows7) are connected by wire to a Linksys WRT310N router

In the VB GUI, select the VM->Settings->Network->Adapter 1->Attach To->(select Bridged Adapter). It's covered in the "Bridged Networking" sub-section of the "Virtual Networking" section of the User Guide. A funny place to hide it

Thanks for pointing me in the right directions, it saves me a lot of time. I read the Virtual Networking article and implemented:

VM/Settings/Network
Adapter1
Enable Network Adapter
Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM0 [for Vista guest]
Attached to: Bridged Adapter
Name: Marvel Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

I did not notice anything else to be done. But BB18 still cannot connect

If you can get out from the Vista VM onto the Internet then the network is working. Next thing to check is the Windows Firewall in the guest. I suspect that this will block BB18.

I can get out from Vista VM onto the Internet (can update).
Windows Firewall is set to let BB18 pass, on all three machines (wife’s XP, host’s Windows7 and Vista’s VM.).

But BB18 still cannot communicate on the home network (as it previously could).
I will talk now with Bridge Baron, since it seems that the problem is not with the Virtual Box.

Again, thank you very much for your helpful guidance.

Bridge Baron suggested disabling Upnp in the browser. This did it. I can now play BB18 online.
I don't really understand, before using VB, I could play with Upnp enabled. But why argue with success.
Thanks a million
