Hi All,
Host OS: windows xp
Guest OS: Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 Kernel 2.6.18
VBOX version: 3.0.4
I get a black screen when my guest OS OEL5 is up. OEL5 is just another distro of RHEL and Centos but with oracle logos.
scenario 1: From the boot up page(refer: this is the boot up screen: boot.jpg), after it says press I for interactive startup, I just get a blank screen. I do not know if the daemons got loaded or not. It does not go to 2.jpg . I immediately get a black screen after the boot up screen.
scenario 2: From the boot up page(refer: this is the boot up screen: boot.jpg), after it says press I for interactive startup, I wished to get screen shot of the boot process just to post the screen to the forum. When i pressed print screen, I get 2.jpg. Now after all this, i am able to get command line interface(shell prompt) for me to login but I still do not get the login page.
I believe there is some issue in the visual display/graphics settings. Please help me. Thanks in advance. I'll upload settings if required.
settings: enabled acpi, disabled 3d acceleration, enabled pae/nx, disabled vt-x/amd-v
cpu: t 2400 intel 1.5 GB RAM
I also receive the following error when I select vbox-> machine -> close -> send the shutdown signal: interface). it is likely that it is not set up

Re: black screen appears during boot up of guest OS
Two things that I see is there you are seriously low in RAM and allocating more than you really have available.
Second thing is there seems to be an issue with the kernel, but may be the reason of the first problem.
You can try to install with 256 meg but it may not work. You should really see about increasing the amount of memory in the host.

Re: black screen appears during boot up of guest OS
My host system has 1.5 GB of RAM. I initially allocated 512 MB to guest OS. Later I even allocated 756 MB to guest OS. Do you think that is still low.
More info: I even downgraded Virtualbox to 3.0.2 and the problem still persists.

Re: black screen appears during boot up of guest OS
Reinstalled 3.0.2 and the guest OS. Now it works fine with the same settings.
