I running a test machine with Debian Lenny and I run a VBox machine on it using the same Debian (Headless). Everything looked fine last evening, but this morning the VBoxHeadless process didn't run anymore.

Does anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this?

Did you shut down the VM that you had started last night?
What you indicate sounds like it is already running.
