I subscribed to, and participated in the original thread, where video problems were being discussed. I made mention of the fact that my pre-existing VM's wouldn't load in VBox 3.0.4.

Host machine is running Ubuntu, Intrepid, 64 bit. Guests are WinXP.

I finally got those XP machines to load. I had changed the virtual hard drives from IDE to SATA, when I decided to mount multiple virtual drives onto one machine to do a thorough virus scan. When I realized that all those drives were SATA, I switched them back to IDE drives. Windows loads up properly now. It would seem that the SATA driver in 3.0.2 is incompatible with 3.0.4.

I'll test the other VM's tomorrow, and see how they run with GA 3.0.4.

I think you have found the same issue I had with XP guest.

I had two SATA's, one on port 0 and one on port 1. When I removed the port 1 SATA or moved it to any port other than port 1 the VM starts.

Strange. I have a VM, just attached a second HDD to SATA1 and it booted without issues. Please post the log here (use the attach feature) of the failing VM, there might be something in it that can help. After that, we can decide if a bug report needs to be created (if it isn't already).

Requested logs, failed start first. Second log still has SATA drives attached, only the boot disk was changed to IDE, and it fails to start as well.

Upon removing all SATA drives, the VM goes through a normal startup.

(It may or may not be of interest to anyone reading, this machine's primary use is to test the stealthnet concept of anonymity and distributed file sharing. http://www.stealthnet.de/en_index.php) I think that I got both attachments, but they are backward..... haven't done this before, lol

Nope, messed it up somehow. Trying again with the FIRST log:
I will note again, this machine has GA v.3.0.2 installed. I can afford to lose this machine, so I will install GA v.3.0.4, then try restarting. That will test the video problem that brought me to the original thread, then I will test the SATA issue.

Alright, so far, so good. No video corruption after installing GA 3.0.4. Need to disable the AV - it wants to do an update and a scan, so it's taking forever to get a usable desktop.

Ok, got a clean shutdown, changed the primary virtual hard drive to SATA0, and got a good start.

Another shutdown, added SATA1 to the mix and, it fails to start.

Still no sign of the video corruption that initially brought me to the forum. Hmmm. There's no way to tell if that was just a fluke, or if it was related. Oh well. I'll be willing run any other tests that will help you guys to figure it out - just let me know!!

Bug #4695 relates to the issue and has log attached.

Good, the devs should be able to pinpoint the cause of the start failure and we can keep track of the fix and provide more information if they request it.
