XP video resolution problem (Ubuntu 8.04/VB 3.0.4)

Hello,

I am running Windows XP (SP3) VM on a Ubuntu 8.04 laptap with VirtualBox 3.0.4 installed. With guest additions installed, i can choose between 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions. My laptop (HP nc6320) has a 1024x768 lcd panel which perfectly works with Ubuntu.

I am able to change to a 1024x768 resolution in XP when i delete the "VirtualBox graphics adapter" and reboot. With the standard VGA driver set to 1024x768 it works fine, although Windows sees new hardware, and wants to install the Virtualbox graphics adapter again.

I tried to solve this problem with varying video memory configs; 8M, 32M, 64M, 128M but that did not work.

The question remains: how to increase screen resolution with the VirtualBox Graphics adapter installed?
Does anyone recognise this problem?

Reading and following the Forum Posting Guide would have saved yourself the trouble of opening a topic. Reading the Manual would also help a great deal. You need to install the Guest Additions. It's also in the VirtualBox FAQ. Because it's so easy to find, I'm locking this one.

@ Sasquatch:
Maybe I did not explain the problem well enough.

In my previous post, I stated that i had the guest additions INSTALLED, but then I am NOT able to enlarge the screen resolution to 1024x768. With guest additions REMOVED, i CAN set the resolution to 1024x768, due to the standard VGA driver.

But I want Guest Additions installed to speed things up. Right now, that leaves me at a 800x600 resolution at most. I used Guest Additions version 3.0.4.

Ah, sorry about that. Must have missed that small part. I was in a bit of a hurry because I had some visitors. Again, sorry to lock it without reading it completely. I did look for the terms "Guest Additions", but must have missed it.

Anyway, to get it to use dynamic resolutions, you have to check the Machine menu. There you will see the option "Change resolution to Guest Window" or similar. Make sure it's activated (there's a checkbox in it, it needs to be ticked). After that, just resize the window and the resolution should change. You don't need to change the resolution in the Display Properties, that will always fail to 800x600 max.

I hava a similar problem, with an Ubuntu 9.04 guest. Here it is worse as whenever I boot the guest system I receive the following message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.
The following eror was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.

(EE) Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.
When I click Ok the options are login in in terminal mode, use the default video mode, or reconfigure video. insisting to use default video mode several times, I and up with the logon screen in 800x600 mode. The option for resizing screen automatically with resizin the window is deactivated in the Machine menu, as is the Seamless mode.
I really don't know what to update. My systems, both the host and the guest were updated to the latest updates available and I'm using what I suppose to be the latest VBox Ubuntu edition (Oh yes, I'm not using VBox OSE, it gave the same results and then I decided to download VBox directly from Sun, hopping that it would give a better result).
If any one can give a help will be very very welcome.
My "xorg.conf" file in the guest system reads just as:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

I have the same problem. Running openSUSE 11.1 x86 on a ThinkPad T42 and VirtualBox 3.0.4 with Windows XP Pro 32-bits as a guest OS.

I think is a little bug of the "VirtualBox guest additions 3.0.4"

I found two temporally solution for this problem.

Solution number 1- Reinstall the guest additions and make sure to mark the checkbox "Direct3D Support (Experimental)" in the installation setup.

Solution number 2 - With the guest additions 3.0.4 installed, download the VirtualBox Guest Additions 3.0.2.iso. Mount it in the VM and extract the drivers (look at the ReadMe.txt file inside the 32-Bit folder for instructions) and intall the video driver 3.0.2 if you dont want the Direct3D Support (Experimental).

Hope it solve your problem...and sorry for my poor english.http://forums.virtualbox.org/posting.ph ... =7&p=91163#

You don't have a similar problem, because you don't run Windows as Guest. Your reply is off-topic here. Check my Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config and if it doesn't work, open a new topic in Linux Guests.

@Tango01:
I removed the older GA from my XP VM, rebooted then installed the 3.0.4 GA. No problems with resolutions, can select up to 1152 x 864 and it also dynamically resizes. I do however have 3D enabled and installed. Not tested without.

@sasquatch,

Thanks for the reply, I overlooked this "Auto-resize Guest display (Host+G) option because this option is not available when the guest is in full-screen mode.
But it solved my problem, I've got maximum resolution, even automatically after my WinXP guest reboot.
