I just updated VirtualBox to version 3.0.4 from 3.0.2. I started my Windows Xp guest and installed the updated Guest Additions. At the end of the installation, the installer asks for a reboot. Upon restarting, the Windows guest hangs just as the Windows Xp progress bar displays. I have also attempted to start the guest in safe mode with the same result. I additionally tried to start Windows with "Last known good configuration - settings that worked" with the same result.
Anyone with a similar fault?
During safe mode boot of the Windows Xp guest, it stops and hangs here:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys
guest additions 3.0.4 renders windows xp guest unbootable...

What are the technical specifications of your host PC and the settings of your guest operating system?c_martini wrote:I just updated VirtualBox to version 3.0.4 from 3.0.2. mup.sys is a new one on me, but I did find this. You can find several other instances of this problem if you google for it.
Did you do anything else besides upgrade VBox and install the new guest additions? You hadn't attempted to clone the hard disk, enabled different hardware, create a new VM for the same hard disk?
You could try reverting to 3.0.2 (or earlier) - you would also need to revert the guest additions first.

Re: guest additions 3.0.4 renders windows xp guest unbootable...
Thanks for the suggestions. It seems mup.sys is not the problem however, only the last thing that displays as loading during the boot process. I would not be able to revert the guest additions back to 3.0.2 as I cannot even get into the Windows guest to uninstall 3.0.4 and then reinstall 3.0.2.. The only way for me to do that is if I can boot the guest with a startup disk image into a dos-like mode and manually remove the files for the installed guest additions or something. Reverting VirtualBox itself to 3.0.2 would be fine, but that did not cause the Windows Guest to freeze during boot.mpack wrote:mup.sys is a new one on me, but I did find this. Re: guest additions 3.0.4 renders windows xp guest unbootable...
One thing to notice is that if you set the size of your Windows XP SP3 image smaller than 1.5 GB to 2.5 GB of disk space and if you have allocated 1 GB of memory to Windows XP guest, you might not have enough disk space for the swapfile unless you move it to a different drive.
As for guest additions rendering Windows XP guest unbootable, this might be a bug related to Windows 7.

Re: guest additions 3.0.4 renders windows xp guest unbootable...
Well i found a solution.
Try this on guest os:
-Boot to windows xp recovery console (mount an iso image to VB or install it)
-type to console: disable intelppm
-reboot
-boot to safe mode.
-search for intelppm.sys file and delete it.
-reboot and install vb guest additions again.
-Problem solved (AT least this method worked for me)

This is happening for me if i change my Boot volume from IDE to SATA. Strange though as other volumns work fine as SATA.
