Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
I have upgraded to VirtualBox 3.0.2 and now the shared folders in my windows xp guest fail to work. I tried updating the guest additions but it didn't help. Does anyone have any idea why?

Re: Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
Look in the settings for the guest and make sure that they are still there.
Then it may be possible that the install failed to install correctly and in this case you should try to install again and select repair.
It may be necessary to re-create the shares although I have not heard of this happening before.
If you need further assistance then you need to also provide what the host is and the version that you upgraded from.
If you update your profile to include this information then it will make it easier for us to help.

Ok I have updated my profile to include that information
I had already checked (and double checked just now) and the share is still there.
I also checked and Windows does not see "VBOXSRV" as a networked computer like it should.
My host is Fedora 10 and once again the Guest in question is Windows Xp
The version I was using before was 2.2.2.

Have you tried to change you XP File manager to Classic mode?
Somewhere I read that this is a problem. Once changed you should see the share in the network section or you can manually map the shares by using this example:

As far as I know the File Manager was left alone. I tried the command and got the same problem. I had already mounted the share as a drive when it was working, windows says that "VBOXSRV" is offline.

Re: Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
When you upgraded did you uninstall the version 2.2.2 and then install 3.0.2?
At this moment it appears that a service is not running or was not upgraded properly.
Also 3.0.4 is out and might have a fix that could be causing this problem. (Just a thought)

Re: Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
I did an upgrade using
Yum did all the work of upgrading from there. I am currently downloading 3.0.4 and will try it.
For the guest additions I just did an upgrade install. If the upgrade to 3.0.4 doesn't help I will try a fresh install of the additions.
Code: Select all
sudo yum localinstall VirtualBox-3.0.2_49928_fedora9-1.i386.rpm --nogpgcheckFor the guest additions I just did an upgrade install. If the upgrade to 3.0.4 doesn't help I will try a fresh install of the additions.

Re: Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
Ok I have installed the 3.0.4 and reinstalled the guest additions from scratch and still same result.
I noticed as I shut the machine down again that it was "synchronizing" with the network drive linking to my share. I have just checked and it is indeed writing changes to it. What I don't get is why does it think it is offline when I am logged in.
I just checked and shared folders is working fine on my win2k vm so it seems that there is something going on on my xp machine specifically.

Re: Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
If it states that it's offline, a big chance is that the feature Offline Files is the culprit. I had a customer at work who got a message that she was offline and the network did go offline for a brief moment (though her Outlook stayed online) because offline files thought she was offline or sheduled a sync. Disable Offline Files from Start > (Settings >) Control Panel > Folder Options, then the last tab Offline Files. Disable all the checkboxes there, clear the stored files and reboot the VM.

Re: Shared Folders not Working, Windows Xp
That fixed it thanks. I was beginning to think that it might have had something to do with the windows networking, and it turns out it did.
