[Solved] Installation ended prematuraly

Upgrading from 3.0.2 to 3.0.4 in Windows XP host. Error Message:

Code: Select all

Sun xVM VirtualBox Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error.

Where can I find the installation log? I only found the machine log vbox.log.

I can uninstall the network driver but can't uninstall the VM.

Two things that you can do to see if you can get this installed:

1. Right click on the install program and then left click on run as admin.
or
2a If that fails you need to reinstall version 3.0.2 and select repair. (DO NOT reboot)
2b Run the version 3.0.2 install again and tell it to uninstall (DO NOT reboot)
2c Run the new Version 3.0.4 install and see if it works (This time reboot)

First step not possible as this is XP. The others succeeded and now I have a working 3.0.4 install.

I get the same error about premature end.... I tried your solution but it does not work for me.
When 3.0.4 installation fails, it does a rollback.
So when i run 3.0.2 i get no repair option.
And whether i reinstall 3.0.2 and then uninstall it - 3.0.4 still gives error...

So I am now back to 3.0.2, waiting for next release that will hopefully fix this.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. You say that it works in 3.0.2, but you also say that when you run it you do not get a repair choice.
What Version was the one you have before version 3.0.2?
I suspect that you need to run the version that caused this problem which is more than likely version 2.2.0
You should see the proper selections and then follow the guide above.

If all else fails you do have an option to use though, (because it will never work right until it is repaired) and that is the Windows Installer cleanup located here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

If you are experiencing installation problems on Windows hosts you might want to run the Microsoft Installer Utility. It's available for free here: support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 It does not uninstall VirtualBox itself but provides a way to clean the registry from leftover data of former installation procedures.
