Ok. So here's my dilemma.
I basically just want to get shared folders working so I can move a 35MB file off the VM onto the host.
The way I see it, I have 2 options: USB/External hard drive ...OR... Shared Folders. The USB stuff was getting hard (getting the VM to recognize a USB external HD) so now I'm trying Shared Folders.
I created a shared folder in the settings menu for the VM. If I try to use the cmd prompt for either the Host or the guest, it's telling me path not found. According to the manual, I need to type "net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename" in the command box in the host.
I replace sharename with the name of the folder I created in the VM. so it is "net use x: \\vboxsvr\FolderTest"
I don't understand what else I need to do. "x:" is not a volume on my guest VM, I know that, maybe that's the problem?
Are there other commands I need to type on the host? Do I need to type these on the guest too?
At one point I thought I needed VBoxManager, but apparently I should be using the command box.
I've been struggling with this for a couple days and I could use some help.
Also, someone in another thread asked me if I added guest permissions. I said I didn't know, but the manual says it's installed automatically with windows operating systems (I'm running windows server 2008 on the guest). At the least when I click Devices > Install Guest Additions, nothing comes up on the VM, so I'm pretty sure Guest Additions is installed. I don't know what weight this has on the situation.

Guest Additions has weight on this situation: it's essential for supporting shared folders! Also, I'd be surprised if it was installed by default for any guest.Veger wrote:Also, someone in another thread asked me if I added guest permissions. When you click Devices > Install Guest Additions, is a CD image mounted in the guest? Remember that autoplay may not be enabled - check the CD drive letter in Explorer.
(Guest "permissions" might refer to something different.)

All this does is to mount the VBox ISO with the GA on it. You need CD auto-mount enabled in the guest for it to work "automatically". You can still use explorer to navigate to the CD and run it by double clicking on the correct MSI.Veger wrote:the manual says it's installed automatically with windows operating systems (I'm running windows server 2008 on the guest). Re: Trying to get a file off the VM onto the host
Ok, I've added guest additions (I've noticed that I no longer have to click "ctrl" to exit out of the VM, which is AWESOME).
I guess autoplay was turned off so I had to manually click the install/application file in the folder.
What do I do now as far as getting the shared folder to work?

Well it is explained pretty well in the GA file sharing section in the User Guide. I would start there

Yeah, I've looked that over. New problem now.
“My Networking Places” -> “Entire Network” -> “VirtualBox Shared Folders”
Problem is, "My Networking Places" doesn't show up. I can't figure out why...I think this might be a server issue since it's Windows Server 2008...maybe it's because I"m using DNS or something.
BLAERGH.

Alternatively, on the Windows command line, use the following:While vboxsvr is a fixed name (note that vboxsrv would also work), replace "x:" with the drive letter that you want to use for the share, and sharename with the share name specified with VBoxManage.
- net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename

Hi
You try go to the "guess system" which is your Windows server 2008, go and map a drive, it will prompt you to key in the folder/location, u put in \\vboxsvr\sharename and click ok. Hope this help.
