I run virtualbox on a linux host. guest is win xp.
I want to define a single network-card for the guest which is able to "share" a specific network-card on the host.
example:
on my host i have ath0 with ip 10.21.1.3 (via dhcp) and I want to share this card with the guest so the guest gets its ip via dhcp from the same router .. lets day 10.21.1.40
I thought if using the host-interface-type this is what would be it, but it doesnt seem so. I read the documenation and googled for solutions but what I found are very complex and specific bridging-setups or VBoxMange-commands to create new hif's. I dont even know if I need to manually setup some bridging or manually create a new hif or if I simply do or think something wrong.
What is the appropriate setup to achieve what I want?
thnx,
peter
ps: I dont want any NAT. I want my guest be a full member of my local network, able to share data with the host and all other members of the lan using smb/cifs.

settings > network > adapter 1 > bridged > select the interface that corresponds to ath0
... should be exactly what you need? Do you have those options??

Re: bridged networking on linux host / windows guest
no. unfortunately I do not have this option. (see screenshot attached)
I have :
* not attached
* NAT
* host interface
* internal network
with "host interface" (which sounds closest to bridged) I can choose a local host-network where it should be attached, but I can get receive anything useful via DHCP within the guest, so there seems to be no bridge. Other users claim that one has to create a virtual networkcard on the host using VBoxManage and then setup the bridge manually but that seems stupid to me and should not be anything than a workaround.
thnx for your help,
peter

Re: bridged networking on linux host / windows guest
Hello
I have the same problem here. Freenas (which is the guest os) can not get an ip adress from the router through the linux host.
So if you find the answer, please let me know.
Many thanks
Ed
