DVD access on guest OS

Post by MasterQ »

Hello,

I am just trying VBox 3.0.2 full version because of its 3D support. I have installed Die Siedler (the settlers) 5 as a test. Host is an opensuse 11.1 32 bit, guest a WinXP SP3.

When I am connecting the DVD drive with the original DVD inserted, the game is obviously started because I get the menu. But then I get the message to insert the original DVD. This is the copy protection.

I do not know which kind of protection ubisoft is using but I want to ask which possibilties I have to "tune" DVD access. Are their any VBox options which can affect DVD access? What options should be altered to have more luck with such protection mechanisms?

Best bet it to use the physical drive with the passthrough option enabled. This option is only accessible if you open the VM settings. It is not guaranteed that it will work. As a last resort, you can create an ISO of the disc and get Daemon Tools working in the VM and mount the ISO as virtual drive. However, with that last option, it's possible that the game detects the use of virtual drives and won't start either.
