Help with connecting using VRDP

I am using VBox 2.2.4. My Host is Win XP Home SP/3. My Guest is Win 7 Beta build 7000. i.e. the public beta.

Having looked at the forums and read the V3.0.2 Manual, I didn't download the 2.2.4 version

I can connect to the VM from another XP system on the LAN using the Microsoft Client, with Authentication = Null, Networking = Bridged and I have changed the port. I don't know if its necessary, but I read about that and changed it at that time, it didn't make it work but now it can and I havn't changed it back..

I have tried to connect using the same 2nd XP system, with Authentication = External, both systems have the same user name which I specify as the user name and I get "Your Remote Desktop session has ended" error message. The VBoxVRDP.dll is in the Virtual Box folder.

I have also tried to RDP onto a Nexenta 2.0 VM and this works with Networking=NAT and Authentication = Null, but not otherwise. I have other guest OS's I could try.

Is there a simple configuration change I need? Or is this something probably fixed somewhere between 2.2.4 and 3.0.2

Are you trying to do this over NAT?
I am having a little problem trying to follow your information.
Can you lay it out for me in block form, Example below:

Machine 1 = Win XP Machine 2 = Win 7
Machine 1 IP =xxx.xxx.xxx machine 2 IP =xxx.xxx.xxx
Machine1 and Machine 2 are on the same network
Network mode = Bridged.

Kind of like this. Remember the more information that you can give the easier it will be.

Also I need to know where the other machine you mention comes into play.
You say it is on the same network and that it can actually connect?
Do you have a router?

Host = Win XP, Home Edition SP/3 VBox 2.2.4, so no RDP
Guest = Win 7 Public Beta, Network = Bridged, Port = ! 3389, Authentication = Null
Client = Win XP/SP 3, using the Microsoft Client.

The client & host are different physical machines. They are all using 192.168.x.x addresses. This works.

I want to turn some authentication on.

If I turn Authentication = External, on the Guest the Client cannot connect to the Guest.

Do I have a router, interesting question, I have a linksys wireless gateway. Is that a router?

Is this good enough?

Using the external authentication, the client credentials will be checked against the HOST

From the book
(On Windows hosts, VRDPAuth.dll authenticates users against the host's WinLogon system)
In other words, the "external" method per default performs authentication with the user accounts that exist on the host system. Any user with valid authentication credentials is accepted, i.e. the username does not have to correspond to the user running the VM.

Does this look like what you are trying to do?
Yes a wireless gateway should act as a router.

To be totally honest with you I have used the external auth. before and it seemed to cause intermittent problems for me. I know it works but it can be a little touchy to setup and have it working properly. At least in Windows and maybe just me. Since no one can get into my LAN I just use null now, and rarely RDP in anyway. I mostly use SSH since I do a lot in Linux.

Yes, this is what I'd like to do. Actually any form of authentication would be good.

And it seems I have router, but VNC (to the client) works without fiddling with the router. Was there some advice on that you might have?

Otherwise can anyone help? I don't connect when I specify the VM as authentication method = external.

VBox 2.2.4 & Host OS = Windows XP Home edition SP/3. (Other parts of the test environment are specified above).

OK I re-entered this project and may have found the problem (at least for Windows users).

First thing to remember is that external will authenticate against you Windows HOST account and not the guest. (You must use an account login that is on the host)
Second thing is (and really important) that the host be able to find the file VRDPAuth.dll.
This file VRDPAuth.dll is in the .VirtualBox folder and unless you set a path statement in the host the rdp client will not be able to find it and it will not work.
By default the .VirtualBox program directory is placed under c:\Program Files\Sun\xVM\....What ever. I do not install programs this way so you will need to find the file VRDPAuth.dll and then put the entire path in the path statement on your Windows HOST.

After that you will find that it works as it should.

Also remember that when using VRDP you access it via the HOST and a port number. You do not access it guest to guest. You can specify the host PC IP address followed by the port that you setup for the guest and it should connect as it is supposed to in a guest to guest, or other PC to guest.

I have set my PATH to include c:\Program Files\Sun\ xVM VirtualBox. Although it is at the end ofthe PATH env.

I have checked that the VRDPAuth.dll is in that folder.

I have set the VM parameters to 'external' and I am still not connecting using the Microsoft Client from another system. (I am not trying Guest to Guest.)

Any more ideas? Anyone?

Can you connect to the VRDP through localhost? Have you forwarded the correct port in your router?

I have been conducting further tests and talking/chatting/mailing to people elsewhere. I am now incrementally going to summarise these tests and the current state. This may take a couple of edits as I need to collect my test logs form various systems.

The basic problem is that "I cannot connect using the Microsoft RDP client to a VM hosted on WindowsXP Home when the Remote Dispaly Authentication Parameter is set to 'External'." These connections work when Authentication = Null.

There is now one exception case, see below.

All previous threads discuss the use of two systems both running Windows XP Home SP/3, which I refer to as the Client & Host. The client runs MS mstsc.exe. The host runs Virtual Box 2.2.4 with a W7 Beta build 7000 VM. I refer to this i.e. the VM as the Guest.

I have configured the %PATH% variable on the Host to include the Virtual Box folder and tested this using command and calling VBoxManage.exe -v. I use a non standard port throughout. I have used both name aliases and the tcp/ip address in the connection parameters string. i.e.

machinename:port, localhost:port and 192.168.1.xxx:portno

I have installed a new user on the Client for the purpose of testing this problem. This has a password, but is a limited user. It connects using credentials with Authentication=Null, it fails to connect with Authentication=External.

I have a log from today's tests, conducted on my std host

The first login was using mstsc.exe localhost:portno from the Host, this failed, the second, successful login was from the client system, the limited/passworded user using the connection string tcpip_no:portno, username=client user name. I am then prompted for a login and password and use the HOST user name and password, which is not null.

I find this odd, but I have found one way to connect to my host using RDP.

Does this imply a HOST misconfiguration?

How can I get my HOST to behave reliably? I want to be able to rely on the external authentication functionlity.

This is a reply to the post immediately above and uses mstc.exe running in the same user as the VM on the HOST machine.

I have built a new host.

I am not the systems administrator. This is XP Pro, SP/2 and connected to the LAN via wifi. I am using VBox 3.0.2, my Guest is a Ubuntu 8 VM and I have tried to login using mstsc.exe on the local host, and my standard remote client. I can post a log file if its helpful.

This connects with authentication = null and fails with authentication = external. On the client, I have used the remote user created for testing purposes, a limited user, with a password.

The Host and Client are in seperate workgroups and domains. AFIAK, the VM receives the login requests, they are being rejected.
