The *.vdi files are the actual (hard drive) for the operating system. If you do not have any snap shots you can simply copy the information from the guest settings and then create a now VM and tie the VDI file to it. Other than that you could export the VM and then import it to the new machine. This works really well for me. I transfer machines all the time between one computer and another and they easily install.

Sorry, your profile did not say and I assumed you had a newer version.
I think it was introduced in version 2.1.4, though not sure any more.

Upgrading should not harm the VM as they are saved in a location that does not get deleted if you upgrade or uninstall and then install the new version.
With your version it is advisable to uninstall and then install the new version due to the many changes that has occurred between versions.
You should however backup the .virtualbox folder and all control files first to be safe.
Actually backing up the directory and control files should be done on a regular basis anyway to protect you work.
