help setting up XP

Hello I recently downloaded Sun VirtualBox
My OS is Ubuntu 9.04

Ive been reading some tutorials on how to set up Windows XP in VB. The part where I get confused is when it says to download Windows XP in virtualBox.

I have the Windows XP disk, but how do I get it to go on Virtualbox? (do I need the serial number?)

also when I start up a blank Windows XP in VB I get an error saying
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Re-setup the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.
If you need any more information on my problem, I will be happy to answer.

Also sorry if this in in the wrong section...(I was debating with myself whether to put it here or in "VirtualBox on Linux Host"

The place is not wrong, but I need to tell you that yes you need the install Key to install any Windows product. If you do not then it will not install.
Please read the Forum Posting Guide and be advised that we do not allow or discuss illegal use of software. If you have the install key let me know and we can continue with helping you to install the product in VirtualBox.

I have the install key. Though I must say that I think the XP disk is is bad(scratched to much) because when I tried using it to install XP as my main operating system everything works and while it was downloading it, it just froze... on several attempts after that it did the same thing. So, i'm not sure if it will work with Virtual box. It's worth a try.

Sounds like you have a bad disk my friend. If that is the case you will not be able to install the operating system in VBox either. Since you have the install key (which is what you are really paying for) you can however install the medium for any Windows XP that fits your key if you can find one that is not defective. Microsoft even has a replacement policy. You can look here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171931

I am attempting to run Ubuntu 9 as my host and Windows XP as the guest. The only reason is that I need to run ITUNES in order to set up my IPOD and load music into the library by way of the CD. I have been able to mount the CD but when attempting to read files from it, the host session locks up and I have to reboot. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I definately do not want to go back to running Windows.

Thanks

The CD drive is visible to both host and guest, and this can lead to confusion on the part of both the host OS and the user. In my experience it is better to install the guest OS from an ISO image of the CD, rather than the CD itself. You will need to google for software which can create the ISO image from the CD. On Windows I like the freeware "ImgBurn" app.

If your install CD really is unreadable then you can borrow a CD from someone else, provided it's the same category: XP Home or XP Pro, OEM vs Retail (in fact I'm not totally sure that a non-branded (i.e. not Dell, HP etc) OEM CD is different in any important way from a retail CD).

Ok, you have your ISO, now mount that in the VM and install it with your own key.

VBox still does not support audio file format via CD/DVD. I just tried it again with version 3.0.2 and it causes the media player to stop responding, also within the file explorer it still states that it can not read the files. Maybe some day...
In the mean time you would still need to transfer audio files via the shared folder route.

:?: I just did a search of the thread, and yours is the first mention of "audio". The OPs question is about installing XP from a data CD is it not? Which VBox does support.

My eyes are crossed sometimes but the statement looks to me like Len was talking about audio and copying from cd to the library which more than likely will not happen. I put an audio cd in my drive and the guest can not do anything with it. Says unreadable.

Ah... I had failed to notice that lprice was not the OP, hence my confusion: I was still concentrated on the original question about installing XP on an Ubuntu host from an install (data) CD.

That could still be the case. My replies might be a figment of your demented imagination... :-)
