virtualbox locks up my machine

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 (64 bit) as my host on a quad core amd. I had no luck getting usb to work in kvm so I ripped out kvm to try
virtualbox.
Anyway, to make a long story short, as soon as I try to run the virtualbox gui my machine locks up hard.
After googling a bit, I tried turning on/off the amd virtualization support in the bios, I tried upgrading the bios but neither of those
things made any difference.
If anyone has any pointers as to what I should look at next for solving this problem, it would be much appreciated!
thanks
