Error: "FATAL : No bootable medium found!"

Post by naja »

Error is "FATAL : No bootable medium found!" when trying to create a new VM. Actually this is a new install of Ubuntu 9.04 64BIT on a Dell t3400 quad-core with 8gigs of RAM, so there aren't any other guest VMs sitting on it either.

Info:
HOST - Ubuntu 9.04 64BIT on a Dell t3400 quad-core with 8gigs of RAM

GUEST - Tried XP, Fedora, and the same ubuntu disk that I installed the host OS with. All give the same error. **EDIT** - I've also tried both CD/DVD drives on the system, just to rule out that the host OS is having a problem with one. Also both read/browse the disks fine when they aren't connected to the guest OS...

Tried two different XP disks before trying the fedora and ubuntu disks. I've also added my user to the vboxusers group and rebooted afterwards.

Setting for the guest is as follows:

RAM - 1024
CD/DVD - Mounting host drive, with and without passthrough enabled
HDD - Created one and added it...even added SATA support under settings for this VM...

Not sure if there is anything else I can check..... Anyone have any ideas?

Try using/creating an iso file and boot from that instead.

Do you add the media after the VM is booted, or before? Mounting a Linux ISO as cdrom would surely work. Also check if you have CD enabled as boot device.

sasquatch - I add it before booting, and the iso I've tried have failed as well. It gives me the option of choosing the boot device if I hit F12 ( I think, not at home right now to verify which key it is...), and it gives the error even when choosing the CD from this menu.

You know I remember someone else that had this problem and they said they had failed to put their login in the vboxusers group.

Type id in a terminal and make sure that you see 123(vboxusers) 123 can be any number.

Ok, more troubleshooting....

Downloaded a new .iso for fedora from their site. It works..... So I decided to dig out another XP disk and try it. No dice. However I can use this disk successfully to boot into on this PC. I tried using the .iso for fedora on the XP VM and it worked. So that .iso works on both the fedora and XP VMs. Now I know the disk I burned yesterday from another fedora.iso files works, I installed fedora on another box with it. I decided to make another XP .iso from the second XP disk, and it fails to be recognized as bootable as well.

I'm starting to think it might be a small setting somewhere. I've attached a screenshot of the main screen.

What is brasero.iso?
You don't need that much memory to run XP.

brasero.iso is the XP iso.

I've got 8 gigs.... why not give XP 2 of it? :)

Hummmmm! With what you are saying in the above posts I still think it is a failed burn. Remember that not all CD drives are the same and the tolerance is really tight. Try burning another CD and make sure that you burn it as an image and try to burn it slower. Most of the time that I see this the burn was fast and there were errors on some drives and not others.

I'll try it, but wouldn't it still boot from the cd even if the .iso failed to burn properly?

Well from what you stated above I got that you could install it from ISO but not from CD that you burned. If it will not install from the ISO either than that is a different problem. I will think about it more and get back to you tomorrow. Getting late here. You might give it a try at a slower burn rate and see. As I say that is most of the time the problem.

Yea, the fedora iso works.. but not either XP iso. The host PC boots from the XP disk, but the VM won't.

If you have an XP machine somewhere, you can create a bootable ISO by using nLite. Copy the CD to hard drive, point it to the folder and let it create an ISO. 100% bootable.
