i had 2.4 version which i uninstalled, cleaned up all the drivers and the registry, and i am trying to install 3.0.2 but it fails with the error message saying that sun xvm virtualbox installer has prematurely ended because of an error. i see the following in the event log:

Did you backup the registry before you mutilated it? First thing I would try is to do a system restore to a point before you deleted the registry entries. Then just do an update install if possible now. You might need to install the previous version to get things back in sync before it will work, then an update to the newer version.

actually, reason i had to do it was that it could not upgrade. everytime it was giving the same error that it ended prematurely. before, when i had the older version, it simply upgraded it to the 2.4 version, but this time, it continued to fail. so i uninstalled it and the new installation failed again. so i researched quite a bit, and some guys had written to disable network drivers, disable networking etc, but nothing worked. so i went in the registry and removed the drivers using psexec since they are protected registry keys(i am sort of knowledgeable about registry mutilations ). then i open the device manager with the option to display all hidden devices and made sure that no virtualbox usb or networking device is present anymore. with no mention of virtual box in the registry and on file system, and i tried installing it back again and it again failed.

the error message about vss writer is a common one and i researched on technet blogs, and some support engineers on msft team ahve suggested that its due to to some ACL issue on some system folders. i did those commands as well, but it still failed.

so restore point wont help since when everything was perfectly running with 2.4, i could not install it then even.

i am thinking of using filemon to see why it is saying "file cannot be found", which file it is, and if it has permissions on it.
