Start Issue

First let me say that I am a rookie to Linux and computer virtualization on the whole. That being said, what I know about computers made me comfortable enough to try this out in the first place. Now for my problem.

Because I was forced to use the Linux OS due to my vista being tampered with improperly, (No, I cannot find the disc), I have been using the Ubuntu 9.04 version to gain access to the internet. My issue is, I use the adobe suite regularly and of course, adobe doesn't have its software configured to run on a Linux system and long story short, i need Virtual Box to use my CS4 software. My issue is as follows.

This happens when I press start.....
Sun xVM VirtualBox SDL GUI version 2.1.4_OSE
(C) 2005-2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
All rights reserved.
Failed to create VirtualBox object! Error info:
Could not load the settings file '/home/ivan/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml'.
Cannot convert settings from version '1.7-linux'.
The source version is not supported
(component VirtualBox).

Okay, I'll say this in closing, I am not use to installing using Linux yet, so that may be what I did wrong. If not, someone please give me some instruction in getting this to work, I have a site that needs to be completed in flash next week and this is my only system. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Please clarify what you mean by "This happens when I press start.....". Do you mean when you try to install or when you try to start the actual VirtualBox Program.
If this is happening when you try to start the VB program can you tell us if you install VIA the Ubuntu Repo?
Also if you have in fact installed the VB program did you create the vboxusers group?
You can type id in terminal to see if you are a member of the vboxusers group. If you do not see your login name there than you need to add it. See below

Code: Select all

usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>

I'm saying that my Vbox is installed, but when I try and run my virtual machine, what I posted before occurs.

Ok, i get what you mean, but I have no idea of how to use the Terminal. I'd need step by step instructions...sorry...:)

Open a terminal and type id in it and see if it shows vboxusers as a group that you are a member of.
If not then type the command that I sent you (it shows as code in my post) and see if you can add yourself to the group.
Let me know what happens. It may be tomorrow before I can reply due to the late hour here.

I did what you said and well, here's what it says.

bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ usernod -aG vboxusers ivan
bash: usernod: command not found
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ usermod -aG vboxusers <ivan>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$

Bear in mind, I may be inputing the whole thing wrong. Below this I'll put in everything.

ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ id
uid=1000(ivan) gid=1000(ivan) groups=4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),107(fuse),109(lpadmin),114(admin),1000(ivan)
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ $ su usermod -aG vboxusers <ivan>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ usermod -aG vboxusers <ivan>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ usernod -aG vboxusers ivan
bash: usernod: command not found
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$ usermod -aG vboxusers <ivan>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
ivan@ivan-desktop:~$

ok a little modification of the code for you should make this work.

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -aG vboxusers ivan
It will ask for your password and you should type it in when asked and press enter.
After this try to run VBox and if it does not work I will need to deal with it tomorrow.

Yeah, i did what you said.
And now this occurs when I try to run the machine.

Failed to create VirtualBox object! Error info:
Could not load the settings file '/home/ivan/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml'.
Cannot convert settings from version '1.7-linux'.
The source version is not supported
(component VirtualBox).

This really looks like a dependency issue to me. Where did you get the VitrualBox program from? Was it from the Ubuntu Repo? Meaning did you install this from apt-get or Synaptic package manager from within the Ubuntu program, or did you download it from VirtualBox and install it yourself?

Things you could try to do.
Using the Synaptic Package manager, try to see if it will reinstall and pickup all dependencies.
Or, Uninstall the current VBox program and then download the PUEL from virtualbox.org and see if installing it will pick up all necessary dependencies.
Everything that I read states that reinstalling with a package manager fixes the problem so hopefully the first suggestion will make this work for you.

Hey, I'd just like to say thank you for all your help and I have a quick question since for some reason, I cannot download Virtual Box on the site...When I attempt that, all I get is an unexpected error screen and then nothing. Now, saying that, I have the Virtual Box OSE installed and when I try to run the program this appears.

Could not load the settings file '/home/ivan/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml'.
Cannot convert settings from version '1.7-linux'.
The source version is not supported.

Result Code:
VBOX_E_XML_ERROR (0x80BB000A)
Component:
VirtualBox
Interface:
IVirtualBox {339abca2-f47a-4302-87f5-7bc324e6bbde}

Would fixing this error be simpler?

Reading you other post this morning you would be better off removing the VBoxGtk and then you should not have a problem installing VirtualBox from either the Ubuntu Repo (if you want the OSE version) or the PUEL version from VirtualBox.org. Continuing to try to use VBoxGtk you will need to ask them for support.

Yeah, the VboxGtk has been removed but i'm still getting this as my error.

Could not load the settings file '/home/ivan/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml'.
Cannot convert settings from version '1.7-linux'.
The source version is not supported.

Result Code:
VBOX_E_XML_ERROR (0x80BB000A)

I believe that you must get Ubuntu back to a stable state with all of the dependencies in order.

What I would do is remove the current version of VBox and then reboot the host computer.
Do a system update to be sure that all files/programs/and dependencies are in order.
Then install VirtualBox.

To update Ubuntu from terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo -i <enter your password>
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
Reboot when complete and try the install again

I appreciate all your help, I believe i'm going to format and try to get my XP working. The only problem there was that I couldn't get the modem to respond. So I'm just going to get the motherboard drivers on my external drive then switch back to Windows. Linux was fun, but, my newbie brain couldn't take it anymore.

thanks
