Problems with Linux Guest and 3.0.2

Post by rke »

Hi VBox users
because I am new first of all a hello to you all.

I am writing in this forum because I have a problem with the latest release of VBox.

Here is the thing
I was using the previous Version (2.2.4) of VBox with CentOS 5 and everything was fine.
On a new Computer with a multicore (i7) I wanted to used the new VBox Version 3.0.2r49928 to
be able to use multiple processors in the guest system.

I did a new install of the 3.0.2 VBox and of CentOS but the installation hang sometimes at 20% somtimes at 80%.
I tried the solution offered here for Ubuntu like switching the virtual network adapters etc. - nothing worked.

Out of curiosity I swichted back to Vbox 2.2.4 and the installation went through cleanly.
I then upgraded the Vbox to 3.0.2 and just used the vdi of CentOS 5 installed with the 2.2.4 version
and it worked! even with more than on CPU core. I installed the guest additions everything seemed fine
even the network is running.
However, the guest runs unstable and freezes from time to time; why I cant tell.

So I wanted to know if there is any real solution/fix yet so I can use CentOS 5 on the lates VBox.
I need the multicore feature. I thought maybe it helps to know that you can use a CentOS installation done under
2.2.4 (even if somhow unstable) with 3.0.2 even if a new installation of CentOS will freeze during installation on 3.0.2.

My host system is:
Intel i7 quadcore
8GB Ram
Vista Ultimate 64bit

Please let me know if there is anything know how to fix this,
or if this is a real glitch in the new version and needs to be fixed in a coming release.
If so maybe we could get a statement as of when the new release will come out.

Thank you in advance
robert

OK one more thing,
I realized that PAE/NX was switched off
so I enabled PAE/NX and also VT-x/AMD-V and Nesting Pages
It seems to run smoother now, but still the guest Linux just freezes after some time.

Can you post the Kernel Version for us?
I have seen this reported here and on other forums and if it is what I think it is there is an issue with the kernel.

It is what you get when you download CentOS 5 on their webpage

uname -a gives
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.18-128.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jan 21 10:41:14 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
thanks

Sorry that was not the kernel I was thinking about. I did see some reference to problems with your kernel version and the solution was to update, or run a patch, but you would need to research that with CentOS. If this persists and you do not find a resolution you would need to post a ticket with bugtracker (link is below my post)

Ok thank you

I tried the full update over yum.
It seems to run a bit more stable but still crashes from time to time.
Of course this doesn't solve the probleme that an installation of CentOS 5 from
scratch with VB 3.0.2 seems to stall all the time

I will put that into the bugtracker
thanks again
