Cannot access shared folders (\\vboxsvr\share) from guest OS

Post by Sootah »

I am running VirtualBox 3.0.2 on a Vista host, guest OS is XP. The internet works just fine in XP, and I've installed Guest Additions; but XP refuses to see any shares that I create. The error given when I try to browse to \\vboxsvr simply states that "Windows cannot find \\vboxsvr".

If I do a "net view" from the guest OS the following message is given:

System error 6118 has occurred.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

However, if I do a "net view" from the Vista host, it will display the hostname of the guest OS.

What's the deal? Why is \\vboxsvr inaccessible?

For the shared folders, you need two things straight. First the name itself, try vboxsrv, so switch the R and the V. The other is the sharing itself. You did share it from the VM settings, right? Not the Host Explorer?

?
But you may need to map the share to see it.

Code: Select all

net use x: \\vboxsvr\<sharename> -p
Replace <sharename> with the name you gave the share.

EDIT: By the way it is a HOST share and a Guest Mapping. Not the other way around.
