Fedora Core 11 VirtualBox 3.0.2 and USB Devices

Howdy,

I must be missing something very basic that is causing this nor to work where others have had success.
I am running an up to date Fedora Core 11, with the VB 3.0.2 PUEL version and my userid is a member
of the vboxusers group.

I've tried all day to get this to work. I've tried everything here that I can find and other places on the
Internet. I've edited just about everything that I can edit and am still not having a bit of luck. I know
it's possible I just don't know where else to turn. I even screwed my box up by incorrectly editing
/etc/rc.sysinit. I'm far from a newbie as far as Linux goes, just using VirtualBox. I had high hopes
for this versus VMware. I really need to have the USB stuff working and would love to ditch the
windows box I have sitting here in my cube to free up space.

Anyone have any ideas of where to turn or where to start?

Pete

You could try if a umount /proc/bus/usb as root enables vbox to use USB.

Martin,

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I do have a USB keyboard and Mouse. Won't this render them useless if
I unmount /proc/bus/usb on the Linux side?

In my original posting, I forgot to mention that I do have the Guest Edition installed on the Windows Vista
Guest, if that makes any difference whatsoever.

Just a thought.

Okay, I know that I have read enough of the documentation and have yet to get this problem fixed, but I figured
that I would start over again and see what transpires. Specifically in the current User's Manual regarding:

USB and advanced networking support

In order to use VirtualBox's USB support, the user account under which you intend to run VirtualBox must have read
and write access to the USB filesystem (usbfs).

Step One - How do I insure that this is what it needs to be?

Again, I am running Fedora Core 11 with most recent updates applied. My Kernel version is: 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64
My version of VirtualBox is 3.0.2 PUEL Edition and the guest OS is Windows Vista. None of the USB devices I have
connected have showed up under the guest OS. However, when I mount the USB sticks under my current Linux configuration
they mount just fine.

It has been suggested that I umount /proc/bus/usb as root, but I have a USB keyboard and mouse on this machine and
do not want to render the machine useless and lose the ability to use the keyboard and mouse and have to reboot the
machine.

Any and all help with this process is appreciated,

Pete

Mouse and keybord don't relie on usbfs, they stand apart from other usb devices, note that your usb keyboard works already at boot before any OS with usb support has been loaded!

Hank,

Thanks for the reply. So, you're saying that I should do that also? Unmount (as root) /proc/bus/usb and
that will solve the issue that I am seeing?

What exactly do you mean with this
I even screwed my box up by incorrectly editing
/etc/rc.sysinit.
Did you follow my instructions in previous threads or was it a typo?

Hank,

When I first ventured out on this project, I made a copy of /etc/rc.sysinit and edited that. Foolishly
I did not realize that it was a symlink (at the time). Thus, I made my box inoperable. I have since
makde a copy of /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit and edited that file versus what I did prior and had no problems
with a reboot per se, but I still could not get the USB support working.

Howver, if you were to point me to the posts you are tlking about and I can follow them in a logical order
to a working conclusion then I'd be happy to try this again and see if I can't get it working.

I might have neglected to mention that I run Fedora Core 11 (64 bit) on the box I have here in the office
and is the one on which I am attempting to get this to run on.

First, I really don't understand what difference it makes that /etc/rc.sysinit is a symlink or not, symlinks are there to work just if as they were the file we are targeting!
Second, unfortuonatly I'm not on a Fedora system right now, I just made a test 32-bit install to confirm my suspicions about usbfs being the bad guy in the VirtualBox USB issue.
This said, here are my suggestion how to edit /etc/rc.sysinit on a Fedora system, comment out as follows:
#if [ ! -d /proc/bus/usb ]; then
#modprobe usbcore >/dev/null 2>&1 && mount -n -t usbfs /proc/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb
#else
#mount -n -t usbfs /proc/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb
#fi
Reboot and issue the following in a terminal: ls /proc/bus/usb. if you get anything mounted there then there must be some other script on your system mounting it.
If nothing shows up start VirtualBox, start your guest and test usb.
