[Solved] Upgrading 3.0.2 fr 2.2.4 w/o losing 2.2.4 guest

Post by pgowdy »

I have VBox 2.2.4 (for Windows) installed and when I click Help->Check For Updates it informs me that I have the current version of VBox. But I would like to upgrade to 3.0.2. I was wondering how to do this and still be able to use my current guest images? If I uninstall 2.2.4 and then install 3.0.2, will I lose my guest OS images? If so, how to I upgrade to 3.0.2 and not lose my current guest images?

Thank you.

Others have simply upgraded and it went smoothly. You still need to install the new guest additions, but this too will work.
You can even uninstall if you need to and the VMs that you have created will still be there along with their control files. VirtualBox does not remove these if you use the VirtualBox program to uninstall.
I would try to do just the upgrade and see if it all goes smoothly and if not then you can uninstall then reinstall the new version.
To uninstall using the VirtualBox program simply run the install for the version that you have now again and select uninstall.

If you feel uncomfortable doing this you can make a backup of the .virtualbox folder under your personal folder before trying. It is also a good idea to do the backup occasionally anyway.

Thank you for the info. I appreciate the reply. Given the amount of time involved with setting up an image, I was afraid to do anything without first asking.
