I'd like to be able to choose large resolutions 2000+x1500+, much larger the monitor I have. Is this possible with virtualbox?
I am running a tinyXP virtualbox and windows server 2003 x64 on the host.

Cheers,

You can not set the resolution any larger than the host resolution is set to.

Why is the resolution limited to the hosts? Is there absolutely no way to get around this?
In VMware it is as simple as changing it in display properties. Too bad VMware pwns resources :(

Well it has to do with stability , speed, and versatility.
VirtualBox (IMHO) tries to do it one step at a time. I am sure that when it is time it will be available in it as well.

Is there any way at all to choose large resolutions? Seriously any cheap hack or kludge is fine.
I am willing to ship $ to anyone who finds a solution.

It is possible, stretch the logged in screen manually out of screen then lock it. This will give you some higher custom resolution within the OS.

However, Im looking for a vmware workstation like higher resolution within virtualbox, until then I simply cannot use virtualbox and must stick with vmware workstation(even tho it only allows 2vcpus per vm :( )

Once this is offered within virtualbox, I will immediately move all servers over to virtualbox.

You can find it yourself in the manual. There is a command there that allows you to make a resolution available.
Chapter 9.13:
When guest systems with the Guest Additions installed are started using the graphical
frontend (the normal VirtualBox application), they will not be allowed to use screen
resolutions greater than the host’s screen size unless the user manually resizes them
by dragging the window, switching to fullscreen or seamless mode or sending a video
mode hint using VBoxManage. This behavior is what most users will want, but if
you have different needs, it is possible to change it by issuing one of the following
commands from the command line:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any
will remove all limits on guest resolutions.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution >width,height<
manually specifies a maximum resolution.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution auto
restores the default settings. Note that these settings apply globally to all guest
systems, not just to a single machine.
