Record microphone audio input on WinXP guest, Vista Host

I'm running VirtualBox 3.0.2, host is Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 on an Intel DP35DP motherboard with integrated audio. Guest is WindowsXP Professional SP3. Guest audio settings are set to to Windows DirectSound Host Drive and the Controller is set to ICH AC97.
In the guest's WinXP Control Panel Sound and Audio Device Properties, Intel Integrated Audio appears as the default sound recording device (it's the only option).
I can record audio input on the host machine, but not on the guest.
Is there some trick to making this work?
