I've got two guest VM's running on VirtualBox 3.0.2 on native Vista on my laptop with 2GB RAM - XP and Windows 7 RC. I have installed the VirtualBox Guest Additions on both virtual machines.

On the XP VM, I can see my host machine's shared files (the default C$ share) in "My Network Places / Entire Network / VirtualBox Shared Folders", and have no problem accessing files on it. But in the Windows 7 VM I cannot see the host at all, let alone its shares. In "Network" I only see the Win7 VM itself. I cannot see the host machine nor any servers in my network (which I can see in the XP VM).

Appreciate any suggestions.

What network mode are you using (NAT,BRIDGED, HOST-only...)
Also Windows 7RC does have a problem/feature that prevents some network discovery, but I can work you through that once I know what you are using.
Another thing that you should be doing is use the shared folder of VirtualBox to share the folders that you want. Have you set this up yet?

Sorry for gate crashing this thread. I have mapped a shared folder in my Windows 7 VM but if I try to run an EXE file from it I get a message that the file does not exist even though I can see it and click on it. It is build 7229 Home Premium I have installed on an XP Pro host. Is this something that is common when running an Win7 VM?

You should try copying the exe to the VM hard drive to see if it will run.
Remember these (2) machines are the same as having (2) separate computers and security settings come into play.

I'm using the NAT network mode. Still having trouble with slow network communications, even after trying all virtual adapters in the list (have a separate thread on that). I can ping

Under Shared Folders it shows one - the default hidden C$ share on the host Vista laptop. I used this share for my XP guest, and it works fine, but my Win 7 RC guest can't see it; can't see any computer but itself, not even the VirtualBox host, let alone any of my servers in my LAN. But I can ping my Win2003 server by name, and the VB host laptop by IP address but not by name.

BTW, please pardon delayed response - I was out of town for two weeks.

If you have a router you should use Bridged mode and if not then you will need to add a host-only adapter to be able to see the network shares.
Strange that XP sees these, but Win 7 may have a tighter network discovery. They did say that they were fixing security issues.
Network speed on the guest is almost always due to the Virtual Network Adapter. It is suggested to use the InterPro/1000 T server adapter.
