Guest Additions install aborts

I am trying to install the guest additions on a Windows XP Professional install with a Ubuntu Juanty (9.04) host. I have the iso file with the guest additions mounted in the VBox virtual drive. I click on VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe and the installer lets me go all the way through to the install process. Every thing goes fine until it gets to "installing video driver...". Then it spits out an error message at me:

Code: Select all

Installing video driver...
Installing driver...
HardwareID: PCI/VEN_80EE&DEV_BEEF&SUBSYS_0000000o&REV_00
Device class name: Display
Number of GUIDs found: 1
INF-FILE: C:\Program files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox Guest Additions\VBox video.inf
INF-PATH: C:\Program files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox Guest Additions\
Updating driver for plug 'n play devices...
ERROR (0000000d) : The data is invalid
ERROR: Could not install files for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista! Installation aborted.
Thinking it was a driver problem I downloaded my drivers to see if I could update them. My drivers tells me I have a VirtualBox Display adapter with a plug n play id identical of the hardware ID displayed above. Windows says I have a VGA compatible display adapter with no driver installed. I have seached through the forums and found very little related to my problem, still no idea what to do or what exactly is causing the problem. Any help is welcome.

Help about says 2.1.4....I don't know how I got the older version. I'll try the new release and see if that works.

Ok this is on XP right?
Click on programs and Virtualbox. Then click on uninstall. Then reboot the guest.
Now click on the device tab at the top left of the window and click on install guest additions.
If nothing happens then click on the devices tab and click unmount, then click on install guest additions again. Reboot when complete.

If you want the DirectX part of the guest additions you will need to install the guest additions on safe mode. While booting the guest hit F8 to enter a mode window and select safe mode.
Once booted then you will need to go to devices tab and mount the guest additions there. Then use the file manager to browse the CDrom for the guest additions and install that way.
