install latest version - conflicts

I have virtualbox (2.2.4) installed on Ubuntu 9.04 via apt-get, but I have problems installing a 9000 pro webcam in a windows xp guest environment (See my previous post), so I figured that I'd try it with the latest version of virtualbox, but I then get an error message:

Selecting previously deselected package virtualbox-3.0.
dpkg: regarding virtualbox-3.0_3.0.2-49928_Ubuntu_jaunty_i386.deb containing virtualbox-3.0:
virtualbox-3.0 conflicts with virtualbox
virtualbox-2.2 provides virtualbox and is present and installed.
dpkg: error processing virtualbox-3.0_3.0.2-49928_Ubuntu_jaunty_i386.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing virtualbox-3.0
Errors were encountered while processing:
virtualbox-3.0_3.0.2-49928_Ubuntu_jaunty_i386.deb

I could probably uninstall virtualbox (apt-get remove), but I don't want to reinstall the Windows xp guest, so can someone tell me if I'll loose the guest OS if I uninstall virtualbox ?
I'd tend to think that as long as you keep the .vdi file its ok (will it remove it during install, should I move the file before uninstalling ?), it should be ok, but I'd like to be sure ..

it wont remove the .vdi

if the previous (2.2) was from Ubuntu repository it was the OSE - then you should remove the virtualbox-ose-modules packages too, before installing the PUEL version from download.virtualbox.org
