Hi, folks!

First time. Downloaded the bin package for windows (version 3.0.2, 49928). Runned the installer and got a msgbox saying:

VirtualBox Installer
Could not create temporary directory! Path: C:\DOCUME~1\Admin\Configurações locais\Temp\\VirtualBox
ERROR: A string claiming to be UTF-8 is incorrectly encoded.

Note the double backslash (\\).

Any idea?

Btw, using Windows XP.

TIA

Where did you get the package?
Your profile states OSE other are you sure that is what you got and want?

Hi, Perryg!

I've got from here -> http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
The link I clicked to download was: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 28-Win.exe

I selected "OSE other" cause I didn't find any option more specific (maybe I've missed something). Should I change it?

The correct choice would be PUEL. Updated it.

OK then it must be a failed install.
Right click on the install program and left click on run as admin.
Then select repair if it is listed or just install if the repair choice is not listed.
Reboot when finished and see if this makes it work.

I'm already running as Admin.
And the installation process didn't take off. The msgbox I refered to appears right after double clicking the installer. It shows up twice and the installation never starts.

Just for the sake of testing, copied the same package to a VMWare VM and installed it.

WOW, it worked right away. Set up a new VM inside VirtualBox (running inside a VMWare Virtual Machine). Did not run it -- too much for such a simple test.

I was wondering if I'm running all the necessary Windows Services on my real desktop. Could it be a symptom of a turned off service? If so, which one? OMG

Hi, folks!

Just to let you know I found out a way to "avoid" the error message.

First of all, I created a folder in "C:\TEMP".
Then, I instructed the installer to just extract the files to that folder (you can make a link to use the arguments):
VirtualBox-3.0.2-49928-Win.exe -x -path C:\TEMP

I'm not sure, but it may be case sensitive - just make sure you enter the exact name of the folder you created.

3 files were created inside the folder. Just select the one you want and double click it.

That's it.

BTW, the search box of this forum is not working fine to me. I searched for "UTF-8" and nothing was found. Maybe I'm missing something again.

And thanks for the replies, Perryg.
