Difference between download and apt-get from repository?

Post by AntiMatter »

Hi,

Using Ubuntu 0.94 x32 and x64. I used to download the *.deb package and installed manually by sudo dpkg -i virtualboxXXX.deb. With Virtualbox 3.02, I have added Sun PPA as 3rd party source and get the update via Synaptic Package Manager. This also worked OK.

Is there any difference between the two (in terms of Virtualbox functionalities) ?

Thanks in advance for any input.

AFAIK they will be exactly the same.
I download and install mine by adding the virtualbox download site to my sources list and it is the PUEL version.
Same as the one I download manually.
OSE versions may vary some I think depending on if you get it from the distro site or sun, but I am not sure about that one.

Thanks very much for confirming and for your insightful understanding. I thought the version from the repository was the Open Source Edition but didn't know how to recognize it.

You can easily spot the different versions. The OSE has the obvious -OSE added to it, and does not have a version added to it's name, like the PUEL version (Virtualbox-2.0, Virtualbox-2.1, etc). Adding the SUN repo from the site is the exact same file as the one you would download from the site manually.
