[Solved] Shared folders using 3.02 on XP Host

Post by theidiamin »

I have a problem sharing folders using 3.02 on my XP Pro host.

I successfully created my shared folders, (C pointing to C: & so on through all my drives) & have installed VBox additions.

However while the following syntax used to work under previous versions it wont now, anybody got a clue what's going on because I don't.

Example [mount -t vboxsf c /mnt C] where C is the share set up in the GUI fails.

The only code that does work is a new one I came across after a frantic search for clues which is:-

[mount. vboxsf c /mnt C] The only problem being that this syntax will only open 1 share @ a time be it C, F, G, or whatever which is not really what's required.

It looks like you are trying to map these drives in a Linux guest, correct?
Now I have tried to map an entire Drive and it always come back with can not work because it is not absolute.
Probably why it is called a shared folder and not a shared drive.

So try selecting a folder and then follow the instructions below

You need to create mount points for each share that you want to map/mount
#mkdir /mnt/cshare
#mkdir /mnt/fshare
repeat for each share

then you map these in terminal by typing this

#mount -t vboxsf cshare /mnt/cshare and so one.
repeat for each share

Remember that Linux is case sensitive.

Thanks for the reply Perry but when set up as C:\ Virtualbox has previously passed the syntax & I have had full access to the root drive. [Note the final \ which is the factor enabling root access]

What I'm seeing now is a new factor which seems to be directly related to the -t statement in that mount. etc., works but mount -t etc., doesn't and for the life of me I can't understand why not.

your statement mount -t vboxsf c /mnt C
what it would be mount -t vboxsf C /mnt/c
Syntax is the mount statement, -t, share name, mount point.
Mount point it the full mount point. First thing that I see is it appears that you have the C and c backwards and that you left out the / between /mnt and C

Usually it is not recommended to use actual drive letters for mapping names and mixed cases cause a lot of confusion.
I still suggest that you change the mapping names to something like cshare, fshare, Etc.... IMHO
