I've been searching around for anyone else having this problem and havn't found much. Is anyone else having performance issues with NAT under Ubuntu Host with a WinXP guest?

Everything works fine under bridgin. But when using NAT things such as Outlook hang frequently on network timeouts. ODBC connections fail/timeout. I move back to bridging and all is ok. Bridging is fine when i'm in my office, but harder to do when working from home/road and having to use a VPN. Is this a common problem?

Which version of VirtualBox are you using?
Almost all network related speed/timing problems can be traced to the virtual network adapter that you are using.
Try changing to the IntelPro/1000 T server instead. You may need to have the drivers handy in case the guest does not already have them.

its 3.0.2 I tried the Intel/Pro Desktop. Will give Server a try. thanks for the input.

3.0.2 here (the problem persists since 3.0).

No matter the network card configured, the problem is still there.

Have you checked bugtracker to see if there is a ticket open on this? http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4343
Since you have been seeing this with the release of Version 3.0.X maybe you should add yourself to an existing ticket.
