Upgrading from 2.2.4 to 3.0.X - Disables 'Extras' Visual FXs

Post by Chatin »

Hi,

I'm running VirtualBox (VBox) on a Host Mac OS X (10.5.7) and a Guest Ubuntu 9.04 (64 bit). On VBox 2.2.4, my Visual Effects on Ubuntu run fine with 'Extras' selected. But when I upgrade VBox to either 3.0 or 3.0.2, no matter what I do my Ubuntu Virtual Machine is no longer able to turn on 'Extras' for Visual Effects. I do the exact same steps that I used to enable 'Extras' on VBox 2.2.4, on the new VBox 3.0.2 and still no joy... :( Because of this I had to downgrade to 2.2.4 where 'Extras' does work like advertised. What is this new version (3.0 & 3.0.2) of VBox doing that is no longer allowing Ubuntu to enable 'Extras' on my white Macbook 2.4? Something that VBox 2.2.4 handles very well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Version 3.0.2 works fine, but you do need to update the Guest Additions as well. Forgetting to do this will cause what you indicate.

Hi Perryg,

Thanks for the reply. I did update the Guest Additions on my Ubuntu Guest but it still does not work. I have also tried a fresh install of VBox 3.02 on my system and installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 9.04 (64bit) on it. I then installed Guest Additions 3.0.2, installed Desktop Effects, installed Compiz Config, (by this time in VBox 2.2.4 the 'Extras' option works) and VBox 3.02 says 'Extras' cannot be enabled. Is there an extra step that I have to do in VBox 3.02 that I am missing?

Thanks.

Nope that's all it usually takes. You may need to surf bugtracker (link is below my post) and see if you find someone else that has the same problem and add yourself to the ticket. If not then you should create your own ticket. The new graphics that VBox is using may need some tweaking. You will need to setup an account there as well. It is not on the same system as here.
