Network lab in VM

This may seem like a simple question to some, but I will ask anyways.
I have a Windows 2008 Server virtual machine and a Windows XP Pro VM, and I want to be able to setup a client server network
with these two VMs, but I am not sure as to what exactly I should do. I tried to set both VMs with static IP address in the same subnet but I had no luck. This is for a lab enviroment so I don't need internet access, at this point, any pointers anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks John.

If you want this to be a close to the real thing as you can get then use bridged mode.
The down side if you want to call it that is you will have internet access out of the box.
This is assuming you have a router that you have your host plugged into.
If not then you would need to setup host-only or internal and add NAT when you decide you want the internet.
The problem with this is the addressing scheme will not be what it would be in the real world.

How did you setup the machines? Both are using NAT? If so thats the problem.

Best to do, IMHO, is to setup an internal, connect both machines to it and work from that.
If you don't want to bother with IP configuration, set up a host-only network, that already comes with a DHCP server.
