If you are running a 64bit version of Windows can you run 32bit guests like Windows XP/2000?
Do you need a processor that supports virtual extensions (e.g. VT-x)?
TIA

Yes, you can run 32 bit guests in a 64 bit host.
VT-x and AMD-v are only needed for 64 bit guest OSs and SMP.

Thanks. Does the same apply for running 32bit Windows guests in 64bit Linux? Should it work without the need of VT-x etc?

It will work and probably better if you do not turn VT-x/AMD-v on at this time.
With VT-x/AMD-v you do get SMP but some are saying it is slower. I do not know this for a fact though.
Type in google.com 32 bit guest in 64 bit host site:forums.virtualbox.org and see what you can find.
