VT-x made performance horrible/not working

When I enabled VT-x in the BIOS for my XP SP3 virtual machine, i could barely get it to log in. It would just freeze up. I alloted almost 1GB of memory to the machine, and when I turn off VT-x in the BIOS the machine works fine. any ideas? I thought this was supposed to help.

Take a look at Chapter 13. Known limitations in the VBox Users Guide and see if any of the top part fits your installation.

I saw that, but I didn't think it applied since I am not running 64-bit anywhere. isn't that the case?

Well since you are not running a 64 bit host or guest I would leave it off.
Later after this has been out a while and things are tuned, and you decide to install a 64 bit guest then turn it on.
