And!

Make sure that you do not set USB filters for anything in the guest as it will take control of the USB ports and you will lose connection to your modem.
The guest will use a Virtual connection to the host NIC and use that to get to the Internet.

Look in the VBOX Window when Guest is started.

But first test a NAT network adapter. If you dont know, what i mean, then read the manual.

You have NAT, ok. That can only work if the Host is connected.

In the Guest you can try "10.0.2.2" as DNS Server.

I do not think this is a direct problem with Virtual box, because I am having the same problem. I think I have found the cause but no solution.

Everything in VirtualBox seems to be working, but if in Windows 7 you goto the Network and Sharing Center you see that the VirtualBox network adapter is listed under "Public Network" and "No Network Access." I have tried looking in every config panel in Windows 7 and do not see any options to move the Virtual Box adapter into the "Home Network" or change to any other network for that matter.

I have been searching for solutions but have not found any yet.

I am having a similar problem, in windows 7 when Virtual box installes the networking adapter for the guest all heck breaks loose in windows 7 networking, in xp or ubuntu the default options that virtualbox installs with allows both the host and guest to access the internet, in windows 7 however it causes the physical networking adapter to recieve a different ip address preventing internet access, I was however able to get it back on the net by playing around with the adapter settings however the guest still can't access the net. can anyone help.
