VirtualBox: Networking problems

Hi there! ;) I'm new user of Virtualbox, I tried running both ubuntu and backtrack through VirtualBox on Windows and they both install + run fine but networking just doesn't work (e.g. can't get on the internet). I'm connected via a ethernet cable straight to my ADSL2+ router/modem.

P.S. i noticed that VirtualBox's network connection settings were configured to some IP, subnet and default gateway. >.< i seem to have lost it when i put it to obtain address's automatically etc, is this important?

Does Virtual Box have any known problems dealing with onboard Network cards? e.g. a NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Networking Controller?
