I am hoping someone has tried this out I think it would be perfect for development if I could install XAMPP on my XP guest with the editor I like -try out all of my changes; Then jump over to my Vista and connect to the XP to further test the site(s) and all of their functions.
I have been doing this over the internet but GOODNESS it is SLOW!!
Has anyone tired this?
Anything I should know or think about before I get started?

Well it will work, but why use Windows when you can do it in Linux? Lots faster!
Not as many problems.

You have a very valid point and I was thinking that myself....... Let me ask;
Ubuntu vs other
With a Vista 64 guest and or XP guest
and the previously mentioned setup what gives me best performance for a host (ie, ubuntu, knopix, fedora, debian, ........ etc)
Which will be easiest for me to set-up my mock site. (1yr ago I would have answered this myself but I have not been using linux since I got my Vista, but I also haven't had to do anything serious)

Ubuntu, or Debian either one will do the job for you. I have both running LAMP.
Ubuntu is a Debian package so they are actually alike, but I like Ubuntu a little better. I also use Fedora 11, and OpenSUSe 11.1 but they seem slower to me.
I have them running with 256 Meg ram doing Web pages, email, mediawiki, phpBB, jabber, in VM's under Vista Business.
All do their thing and unless I do something stupid they never get shutdown or need rebooting, unless updates require it.
Try to stay away from desktops, and if you need one use one that is lean.

Just to be sure do you mean stay away from gnome and Kde? Are you using (a) console/terminal and then loading your VM on top of that?Try to stay away from desktops, and if you need one use one that is lean.

If you are comfortable working from a terminal window instead of a desktop then go that route, that's what I do. It will be faster and require less overhead.
If not then use a desktop manager that requires the least amount of overhead.
Gnome works for most people better than KDE which is rich with eye candy but a waste of resource on a server since you will rarely be seeing it.

Gottcha, Thank you much for the help I got it up and running in no time. Now its time to get back to actually developing.
