installing 3.0.2 on windows host failing

I tried to upgrade from 2.2.4 to 3.0.2, but the install failed and rolled back... no reason given. i rebooted and tried again... stil failed to install. i then tried to uninstall 2.2.4, but the unistaller failed with "fatal error during installationp". probably trying to install 3.0.2 with 2.2.4 still on the box messed up the unintaller. what's the best way to get 3.0.2 installed? i'm installing on a windows xp host.

Reinstall 2.2.4 and do not reboot.
Then reinstall 2.2.4 and tell it to uninstall. Still do not reboot.
Install the new version. This time reboot.

Even 2.2.4 does not install. When it reaches the removing file point, the install is rollbacked (same on 3.0.X) on Vista host.
