VirtualBox 3.0: WinXP CiscoVPN + NAT problem (high latency)

Hi,

I like to share with you a problem that I've been experiencing since I upgraded to 3.0.0. latency

With a machine running WinXP, NATed network and any network card (PCnet or Intel), I experience a really low connection when connecting to a office VPN with the CicoVPN Client.

This doesn't happend when the network interface is configured as bridge. Downgrading to VBox 2.2.4 solves the problem.

I have reproduced this issue in two different host machines (AMD and Intel, 32 and 64bit also), with different installations of WinXP. Also probed different wan links, so it's not a Local LAN problem.

Please tell if you know anything or if there is any Bug related to this.

Regads.-

You could try to kill avahi
sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop

That would tell you if it is related to the DNS issue.
Probably not in your case, but easy to try.

Sorry, I don't have any other ideas other than to try the new version of Virtualbox which came out on Friday.

I suspect this is a general problem with NAT in VirtualBox 3.0. I've noticed similar issues, and I think it has to do with the fact that returning packets to the VM do not get translated properly. Instead of looking like they come from the real source, they look like they come from 10.0.2.2.

You can see that in this post: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19951

So I suspect that your latency is due to the VPN client dropping the packets packets that come from 10.0.2.2. A packet sniffer such as wireshark might show you the same thing.

Hi,

Seems this is not only in Linux Hosts i'm gettign the same problem in windows.

Host Windows XP + Guest Linux

Before in 2.x i had no problem using the vpn now in 3.0.2 it keeps dropping and when up it works very slowly.
Does this only started with 3.0.2 or with 3.0.x itself?

I ask because in case it does i may need to rollback to 2.x.

Thanks.

For me, the problems started at version 3.0. My work around for now is to use bridged mode.

Hi

I have the same problem or some similar, When i upgrade from the VB 2.4xx to 3.x the VPN connection that i was used to connect to my office dont work correctly, I experiment lag times and data loss when I do a ping test. (Using NAT)

The solution is wait for a new release or patch or use a Brigde Connection.

Hello people,

The same for a Checkpoint VPN Client. So I guess this is a problem with NAT + IPSEC packets.

This problem doesn't happen with an SSL client.

The issue of the IPSEC/NAT-Problem is fixed by now in a test build.

Had a linux guest though. But 4500/udp is 4500/udp after all.
You might want to try it in a non production environment if it fits your needs as well.
