I installed virtualbox 2.x about a month ago.
I installed ubuntu 9.04
I then installed virtualbox 3.0.0 today.
I read the users manual about the guest additions for linux.
I installed dkms
I mounted the iso, I ran the install.
I rebooted linux.
I have tried resizing the display , and the outline gets bigger, but the linux window doesn't change size.
I ran dmesg and grepped for vboxdrv and saw that it was successfully loaded.
Does anyone have any ideas for a path forward?
thanks in advance

Did this work in the 2.x version? Meaning were you able to resize the guest then?
As for the GA you need to make sure that you have the kernel-headers installed.
When you installed the GA did you see any warning errors?
You can look in /var/log/vboxadd-install.log will show errors if you had any.
All explained here: VirtualBox FAQ

Re: windows host, ubuntu 9.04 guest, screen resolution woes
I didn't try the guest additions for the 2.x version.
I don't have a /var/log/vbox* log file.
I read the VirtualBox FAQ and there are no references to kernel-headers.
I did the guest additions, based on the usermanual.pdf version 3.
I have the linux-headers installed.
It is possible that I didn't actually install the guest additions, due to my unfamiliarity with ubuntu.
I selected a slightly different option, and it asked for root password, and looks like it is installing right now...
After rebooting, I can resize my window!
Looks like the FAQ could use some updating with respect to kernel-headers.
