[Solved] Virtualbox 3 hard crash on Ubuntu 64 bit

Post by laurens.rietveld »

Trying to run Virtualbox 3 freezes my ubuntu and requires a hard restart. I installed the .deb package for 64 bit operating systems. My log file shows the following:

Code: Select all

Jul 8 23:19:16 laurens kernel: [ 233.842488] VBoxDrv: dbg - g_abExecMemory=ffffffffa0aace00
Jul 8 23:19:16 laurens kernel: [ 233.842543] vboxdrv: fAsync=0 offMin=0x295 offMax=0x2a89
Jul 8 23:19:16 laurens kernel: [ 233.842592] vboxdrv: TSC mode is 'synchronous', kernel timer mode is 'normal'.
Jul 8 23:19:16 laurens kernel: [ 234.051180] VBoxNetFlt: dbg - g_abExecMemory=ffffffffa0c4e7a0
Jul 8 23:20:48 laurens kernel: [ 325.612351] warning: `VirtualBox' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use)
I'm not sure why virtualbox tries to use 32-bit capabilities. Does anybody know why this happens?

Look in your computer bios and see if you have hardware-v turned on.
If you do not see it then you more than likely do not have it and since VBox requires hardware-v to run 64 bit software it will not work.

I indeed do not see any such thing as hardware-v in my bios. But isnt hardware-v a functionality to run 64 bit in a virtualized os?
The problem I have is that virtualbox (the 64 bit version) itself crashes, before I can even create a virtual machine. I tried the i386 .deb installation of virtualbox just to be sure, but indeed got an error message that the architecture I tried to install it on was wrong.

I have a related problem.

Whenever I enable VT-x/AMD-V (I have a core2 Quad CPU) the whole system instantly crashes as soon as I try to start the virtual machine.

This is true on two different (same type of computer) hosts, and with multiple virtual machines, linux and windows.
