VB v3.0.0 CRASHING!

Post by gdiza »

Hi guys,

I've just started using this program.

My first attempt at it was me putting on VISTA.
I gave it 40GB, 1GB RAM, 2CORES (I have a quad core), 50MB Video Memory (acceleration on)

I installed VISTA, loaded SP1 & SP2 and then it just died, blue screened and would not start, not even in safe mode.

Okay, fine, I deleted it and decided to try Windows 7 (build 7000) which I got via BETA etc.

I installed it, got into windows, went to turn indexing off on the C drive (also 40GB, 1GB RAM, 2CORES, 32MB Video Memory with accelation on) and bam, it crashed.

Any reason this happens, anything I'm specifically doing?

I'm new at this, but I'm not really doing much before each OS I install dies.

Tell us a little about the host machine.
Also you can look at the log files in the VBox program after the crash and it should give you a reason why it died.
Click machine in the Vbox gui the show logs while the guest is highlighted.

Hi boet,

Thanks for the reply.
After my post last night, what I did was, I redid the Windows 7 setup and left all VB settings as is, minus changing from a 20GB to a 40GB, from 512MB to 1024MB.

The 7 setup ran for a while and didn't crash.

It's obviously when you play with the settings of the Virtual Machine that causes issues.

My main settings that I changed:

CPU's, instead of 1, I set 2 (I have a quad core which has 4 if I'm not wrong)
Video Acceleration I enabled and gave it about 32MB the first time and 50MB the 2nd time.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, that's it I think.

The two things that could be causing you problems in the first install are (SMP) using multiple cores, and (Acceleration).
Both of these in Version 3.0.0 are bleeding edge and do have some issues.
Add to that Windows 7RC not being finished yet, you have an area that is more than likely going to change quickly and may not work properly for some time.

Settings in Win7RC that should at least work
RAM = 1024 (if you have at least 2 Gig of host ram)
Acceleration = none (64 Meg VRam if you try to use it)
SMP = 1 core
