Windows 2008x64 Guest freezes randomly

Post by matware »

Hi all,
I recently upgraded to VB 3.0 on a Vista 64 bit host. I upgraded the Additions and added a second CPU on a Win 2k8 server guest and its started locking up after between 10min to an hour.
I've noticed that also chews up 100% of CPU on a single processor and doesn't respond to mouse input (or update the display as the clock doesn't change).
Does anybody out there in Virtual Box land have any ideas? Or should I start my intermittent fault finding?

I would start by upgrading to version 3.0.2 then if this does not help look at Chapter 1.6. 64-bit guests of the VBox Users Guide.
Also check to see if you need to update the kernel on the Windows guest for multiple processors.
Also look at Chapter 13. Known limitations of the users guide to see if any of this applies to you.

I experienced similar freezes on my Win 2003 x64 guest (vista x64 host). VirtualBox would respond, meaning I could save the state, resume, move the window around etc, but the guest wouldn't respond at all. While the lockup appears fairly random, my impression is that it happens more frequently when using multiple disk-intensive programs at the same time, such as compiling and then starting to unzip a file for example.

After reverting to one virtual CPU I've not had this problem.

edit: none of the issues listed in chapter 13 applies to me.
